System requirements and compatibility

Published for the Russian-language site. In English, use the Terms of use, Student agreement and Privacy policy.

1. What this document covers

This document sets device, browser, network and peripheral requirements for Ednice software. It applies with the License agreement, the Public offer and the Student user agreement. Help is described on the Technical support page.

2. How the software works

The client runs in the browser with HTML5 and WebRTC. No separate app or plugins are required. The author dashboard, student dashboard, courses, analytics, webinars and consultations open in a supported browser. Server traffic uses TLS; live media uses DTLS and SRTP.

3. Dashboard, courses and analytics

Sign-in, lessons without a live room and recordings work on a computer, laptop or tablet with a current browser from section 5, a keyboard or touch input and a stable connection. A 1280×720 screen is recommended; 1024×768 is the minimum.

4. Webinars and consultations

A live session needs a computer or laptop: several windows are easier, and the camera and microphone are more stable. A host should have at least an Intel Core i3 6th generation or equivalent and 4 GB of RAM, 8 GB preferred. A viewer may use a weaker device if the browser is supported and the connection holds.

5. Browsers

The latest stable versions are supported:

  • Google Chrome;
  • Yandex Browser;
  • Microsoft Edge on Chromium;
  • Mozilla Firefox;
  • Apple Safari on current macOS or iOS.

Outdated versions, Internet Explorer compatibility mode and browsers without WebRTC are not supported. Update the browser before a live session and do not open the same session in several tabs on one device.

6. Operating systems

The software opens in the browser and is not tied to one operating system. Any system that runs a browser from section 5 is enough:

  • Windows 10 and newer;
  • current macOS;
  • a current Linux distribution, including Russian systems, if a supported browser is installed.

A separate Ednice client is not required. If the system blocks the camera, microphone or WebRTC, check browser permissions and device policy first.

7. Device and screen

  • a computer or laptop with a keyboard and mouse or equivalent input;
  • a display of at least 1024×768, 1920×1080 recommended;
  • for a host — a second screen or enough window space to see participants and materials.

8. Network

A stable internet connection is required. A typical home connection is enough for the dashboard. For one host camera these free bitrates are recommended:

  • low quality, 640×360, 30 fps — about 500 kbps;
  • medium, 960×540, 30 fps — about 900 kbps;
  • high, 1280×720, 30 fps — about 1700 kbps.

Each extra host may need up to 500 kbps more. Screen share may use up to 1600 kbps. Viewers are more comfortable from 5 Mbps; hosts from 10 Mbps both ways. A cable or stable Wi-Fi is more reliable than mobile data.

9. Camera and audio

  • a camera the operating system exposes to the browser;
  • a microphone, headset or speakerphone with echo control;
  • headphones or speakers that work with the device.

Headphones reduce echo when several people speak in one room. Allow camera and microphone access in the browser before the session.

10. Phone and tablet

The dashboard and viewing a session open in a mobile browser on current iOS and Android. Hosting, screen share and reviewing assignments are easier on a computer or laptop. Mobile viewing needs stable Wi-Fi or mobile data without a hard traffic cap.

11. Corporate networks

Live sessions use WebRTC. A corporate filter, proxy, UDP block or camera ban can prevent a connection. If a session fails on an office network, check browser camera and microphone access, turn off an extra VPN and write to support with the page address and the time of the fault.

12. Changes

The current version is on this page. If the browser list or network figures change, the text is updated before the new requirements apply.
